How to clean granite countertops – it’s simpler than you may think

Desired for their durability, granite countertops are a popular choice for many modern kitchens. Generally, they are easy to clean, but some methods can wear down the stone and leave your counters more susceptible to stains.

So, what is the best way to clean granite countertops? Experts suggest that there are only two cleaning tips worth your time – and you’ll have all you need for one of them already at home!

How To Clean Granite Countertops

Granite is a beautiful and hardwearing material, but it does require specific care to maintain its appearance and prevent damage. These cleaning methods come expert-approved.

CLEAN THE GRANITE COUNTERTOPS WITH NEUTRAL CLEANSERS

Experts have suggested that there are only two options that are worth using on your prized work surfaces.

Warm water and dish soap: The best way to clean granite countertops is to use a mixture of warm water and mild dish soap, such as cleaning with Dawn Powerwash, says Ahmed Jamal, cleaning expert behind CleaningAdvisor. ‘Simply mix a few drops of soap with warm water and use a soft cloth or sponge to wipe down the surface. Rinse with clean water and dry with a soft towel,’ he suggests.

A dedicated granite cleaner: If you are looking for a deeper clean, then a reliable granite cleaner is perfect for removing any stains. Popular options are Granite Gold Daily Cleaner, available at Walmart, or StoneTech Revitalizer, at Amazon. ‘Regardless of brand, you should always opt for a pH-neutral cleaner for natural stone surfaces like granite,’ advises Laura Avila, cleaning expert.

WIPE UP SPILLS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE

As with any kitchen countertops, the key to long-lasting surfaces is to clean up spills as soon as they happen to prevent them from drying or staining. It is best to blot away any spillages with a clean, absorbent cloth, says Dr. Tali Ditye, cleaning expert and co-founder of home and lifestyle blog Mommyhood101.

‘You may also want to seal your granite countertops periodically to help protect them from stains and other damage,’ Tali adds. You can do this yourself at home with a sealant spray like this from Amazon or consult a professional for a longer-lasting option.

AVOID HARSH CHEMICALS

For a natural stone, it is best to use natural products to keep them clean, experts say. A natural homemade kitchen cleaner, for example, will be kinder to your granite work surface than a tough chemical like bleach or vinegar that can break down the protective cover.

It would be best if you also stayed away from any abrasive cleaners, even natural options like baking soda, adds Laura Avila, cleaning expert and founder of CleaningFan. She also says you should avoid using boiling water on granite surfaces.

While a few splashes from a pan won’t do much damage, constant cleaning with heat and placing hot pots or pans directly on the surface of the granite ‘can cause thermal shock and lead to cracks or damage,’ Laura cautions.

USE A SOFT CLOTH OR SPONGE

How you apply the cleaning solution matters, too, with abrasive cloths, brushes, and sponges a no-go.

‘Instead, use a soft cloth or sponge to wipe down the surface, and avoid applying too much pressure,’ says Laura Avila, cleaning expert. ‘For tough stains or grime build-up, a plastic scraper or credit card can be used to gently scrape away the debris.’

This granite cleaning set offers two super soft clothes ideal for cleaning and buffing any granite surface for a perfect polish.

DRY THE COUNTERTOP WITH A CLEAN TOWEL

After cleaning the surface, buffing it dry with a clean, soft towel helps to prevent water stains and presents a beautiful shine. Working in small circular motions will help to polish the countertop without leaving streaks.

HOW DO YOU POLISH DULL GRANITE?

If your granite counters have turned dull with use, then using a polishing powder can reinvigorate the stone and make it shine. Special granite polishes will help to buff and fill out scratches and etches to restore the stone to new again.

WHAT DO YOU CLEAN GRANITE COUNTERTOPS WITH DAILY?

If you are wiping down granite countertops between uses, warm water and dish soap is more than adequate to keep your countertops hygienic. You can also use antibacterial sprays that do not contain harsh chemicals like ammonia.
